Afghanistan Marathon 2012
In August 2012 a mixed capbadge British Army team (well one Infantry Captain and one Royal Artillery Captain) decided serving in Helmand wasn't enough, but instead thought it wise to run a marathon around our small camp. Due to the size of the camp this means running over 71 laps in the Afghan heat which ended up being over 40˚C, despite getting up at 0400 to start the marathon!
Capt Trish Patterson, 19 Reg, Royal Artillery and Capt Matts 3 R Welsh were the only two foolish enough to agree to the race against one another for the winning position.
We raise money for the Army Benevolent Fund (ABF) a charity who support service men and women of the BrItish Army who put everything on the line to defend us and our country. The charity provides practical and financial help to soldiers, their families and veterans in times of need.
Obviously work came first, so we had very little time for our training between operational planning and preparation. However, we managed to segment a bit of our day, to training around and around this small base. A hard thing to mentally put up with day in day out, but thankfully, by bullying each other into training, we managed to build up the stamina needed for the big day - it wasn't spectacluar, it wasn't even that fun, but we managed to finish...and if you were wondering, I beat Trish. Although I shouldn't boast too much as round two is coming up, in September 2013 we are both running the 102+ Mile Cotswold Ultra.
